Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community.

The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation. SHPE is the Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent.

Mission: “SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.”

Five Pillars of SHPE

In order to achieve SHPE’s mission, Cal Poly Pomona SHPE attains this goal through the five pillars.

Leadership Development

SHPE encourages members to seek leadership opportunities to better prepare themselves for the workplace. To do this, many opportunities are generated within the chapter itself to facility the growth of future leaders.

Chapter Development

Cal Poly SHPE creates opportunities for members to better themselves through networking and experiences that fall outside of the domain of academics and professionalism.

Professional Development

SHPE provides its members with a number of different events that allow them to network with companies and grow into successful professionals. These opportunities allow members to meet with recruiters before career fairs and gives them a competitive advantage amongst their peers.

Academic Development

Active focus is given to the academic development of its members, which is reinforced by study sessions, mentor programs, and Semana de Estudios.

Community Outreach

Give back to our community by volunteering our time to prepare food or create events such as Noche de Ciencias.
